Funding Boost For Higher Ed Research

Forty-one universities Australia-wide will share AU$1.42 billion (EUR 91 million) to boost higher education research and research training this year.

Included in the 2010 Research Block Grants are:

  • AU$610 million (EUR 393m) for the Research Training Scheme, which meets the cost of tuition for students completing PhDs and Masters degrees by research;
  • AU$164 milion (EUR105m) for 3,069 Australian Postgraduate Awards to support exceptional research students; and
  • AU$20 million (EUR 13m) for the International Postgraduate Research Scheme, which is designed to attract the brightest research students from overseas.

The Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, Senator Kim Carr said the Government will continue to support research that drives excellence, collaboration and diversity – vital elements for Australia’s prosperity.
